ARCHITECT. Mike AFOLAYAN
Late Arch. Mike Afolayan was one of the OSI GREATS of the old generation. During his life, he stood out like a lone star among peers in Osi and among professional colleagues.
Arch Afolayan was a prince. This foremost Architect son of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ezekiel Afolayan, Awulodo II was born in 1939.
The late prince Afolayan was a graduate of the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University and an old student of Government Secondary School, Ilorin.
It is believed that his Architectural Firm was one of the first in Nigeria and the very first in the northern part of Nigeria. During his life, his contribution to the development of Osi ccommunity was unrivalled. History has it that the late Arch. Afolayan was the sole designer of Osi Central Secondary School(OCSS), the premier secondary school in Osi. He designed the school layout and also took the responsibility of supervising the project at no cost to the community.
It was because of his selfless service and dedication that the dream of our ancestral fathers and mothers to establish OCSS became a reality, considering the cost of employing the services of a professional Architect at the time. Arch. Afolayan took this project as his personal responsibility and was able to deliver to perfection.
During his time, he also played critical role in helping many young people in the community acquire education even to the University level as well as in their professional careers.
Although snatched away by death at the age of 51 on 18 August 1990, his name and the acts of selfless service will long be written in the annals of history. Continue to rest on, our illustrious son of Osi, Arch. Afolayan Ọmọ Awúlódò Bí Òsùpá, Ọmọ Uke Gàmgà ọ̀nà Ùdójì.

Sunday Emmanuel Oladapo AFOLAYAN
Sunday Emmanuel Oladapo Afolayan also known as STONE MAN was born to the family of Mr. Israel Oni Afolayan and Mrs. Juliana Ebe Afolayan (both late now) on the 5th of June, 1960. He attended the Community Local Education Authority (L.E.A.) Primary school between 1965 and 1973. From there, he proceeded to Osi Central Secondary School and graduated in 1978.
This icon developed an interest in carving when he would peep through his window to see the art craft of a popular carver – George Bamidele Arowoogun who specialized in carving masks (known in the community as Ẹpa) as the carver’s house was directly behind Oladapo Afolayan’s house. The carvings were highly adorned by Europeans who came to buy them from the carver. Osi community then was also well known for woodcarving and served as a point of reference to researchers like Professor John Picton who published an article “The Sculptors of Ọ̀pìn” as a result of the popularity of the town in woodcarving. The Stone man’s interest became so keen that when he started his primary education, he worked towards his area of interest in all ramifications.
He attended Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin where he obtained an A-Level certificate and later continued to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to study Fine Arts. During this period, Afolayan got a lot of inspiration from his lecturers among whom were Professor Kojo Fosu, Professor Olorukooba, and Professor Zuren Dee among others. He was also fascinated by the works of people like Gabriel Bamidele, Mike Bamidele and Daniel Bamidele who were sculptors. After his first degree, he went back to the University for his second degree in order to fully specialize in stone carving as this was trending already. The Stone Man was always thirsty and hungry for knowledge about stone carving and he really explored the brains behind this. He wanted to know how stones were used to carve the statues in places like Èsìẹ, Ikom and others. Afolayan has seen and conquered as he has studied the various forms of stone to know their types and how they can be used in carving. Little wonder he now carves stone like wood. He met with people like Professor Fatuyi and Ben Ekanem whom he collaborated and explored their knowledge to fortify himself.
Afolayan became a lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at Federal Polytechnic, Auchi in the year 1988 and to date, he has been teaching and researching stone sculpture. He has graduated many students who are now renowned in the field of stone sculpture. In spite of some of the challenges he faced, ranging from unavailability of tools to lack of well ground teachers in stone carving, he has always kept his head above the water by going the extra mile to see to the root of carving stone. He has attended many conferences and workshops among which are the 22nd Annual Summer Marble and Art Workshop in Italy, Bruce Onobrakpeya’s Annual Harmattan Art Workshop, Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, and National Stone Carving Workshop, Lagos among others. He also attended many exhibitions within Nigeria. Some of his works include “Omidan: My African Maid”, “Reaching Out”, “Vision for Excellence”, and “Image of Nigerian Nation” among many numerous others. He has not been recording the numbers of work he has carried out and this makes it impossible to know the numbers of work he has.
Most of his works revolve around socio-cultural, political and cultural domains. Some of these works include; “Siddon look”, Northen Aristocrat”, “Ogbuefi”, “Tribute to Nok” and many others. Oladapo Afolayan has become a renowned Stone Carver as he has made a lot of worldly achievements from it. His wife, Dr. (Mrs) Olubunmi Ota-Afolayan has also been a source of encouragement and has always been supportive. This is in line with the popular saying that ‘Behind every successful man, there must be a good woman’. Oladapo Afolayan has never regretted choosing his career as two of his children are currently threading his path and have become graduates of Fine Arts. He belongs to many Associations of Fine Artists among which are the Sculptors Association of Nigeria (ScAN), Contemporary Nigerian Arts etc.
